On beautiful November Sunday, the La Cala de Mijas Lions returned to Butibamba for their Christmas Fayre and Market. Some 30 craft stalls along with stalls run by the Lions assembled and prepared to provide visitors with a day to remember. The weather ensured that those present would enjoy their day in the park.
The official opening of the event was heralded in by the Drang drum band entering the park playing their South American drums. Lions President, Brenda Meredith welcomed all with a short speech and thanks to the La Cal de Mijas Town Hall for allowing the Lions the use of the park for the day. Visitors enjoyed strolling round the stalls offering them Cava and mince pies, cakes, burgers, clothes, jewellery, Christmas decorations, handmade cards as well as tombola and a raffle. There was a tuk tuk, dressed up as a Christmas sleigh and driven by Bob Fazak and Rima, offering children free rides round the park. Throughout the day there was entertainment by singer Laura Elen, flamenco dancing, Antonio the magician who amazed the children with his magic by producing rabbits from his box of tricks. The sound of a bell announced the arrival of Father Christmas and a long queue formed. Each child that visited Father Christmas were given a present and were able to tell him what they wanted for Christmas. The entertainment continued with the Costa Soul singers who sang a medley of Christmas tunes and carols led by Simon who had provided the sound system for the day.
During the day Lions President Brenda Meredith presented a cheque for 1000€ to the Alhaurín el Grande branch of the Royal British Legion to help them support former British servicemen and women in need.
The final act of the day was an amazing performance by an 11-year-old boy, Maxi is boy from Birmingham who goes to school at Jardin Botanico in La Cala de Mijas, who was introduce as Elfis, as he sang a variety of Elvis songs. His performance was outstanding and resulted in many people getting out of their seats and dancing in the park.
